J.C. Nichols’ Plaza
J.C. Nichols opened the Country Club Plaza in 1925 — the first suburban shopping district in the country — and his company built the neighborhoods around it. Kansas City calls itself the “City of Fountains” for its 200-plus working fountains, and many of them are here.
Plaza condos and the grand older homes of Southmoreland house many long-time residents. Buildings with more than six units fall outside the city’s free bulky pickup, so condo downsizing needs a private hauler.
